Friend — The simple truth is that Trump’s actions in Venezuela are illegal under international law and unconstitutional under American law.
But beyond the law, these actions are just the latest example of a strategy of reckless and destabilizing attempts at regime change by the United States.
From nations like Iraq and Afghanistan, to Nicaragua and Guatemala, to Libya and Iran, the United States has attempted, often successfully, to topple foreign governments through either military force or coups and covert operations.
We have seen the devastation that these actions leave behind: Power vacuums, civil wars, economic collapse, breakdown of public infrastructure, and even the development of terrorist groups and fascist leaders.
Now we are seeing this same exact story play out, just months after Trump promised on the campaign trail to end needless wars and interventions. It was a lie.
I want Americans to ask themselves: Should the priority of our government be dropping bombs overseas and meddling with other countries’ governments and futures? Is that really the best use of our time, attention, and money?
Just look at the last year of Trump’s presidency. He has overseen an all-out slashing of federal agencies and lifesaving programs. Millions of Americans are struggling to deal with the cost of healthcare, rent, groceries, and energy thanks to Trump’s policies. But there are two groups that always seem to do well: Defense contractors and oil companies.
That’s why Trump and Marco Rubio are already talking about Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, and even Greenland potentially being next. Trump said himself on Fox News: “We can do it again, too. Nobody can stop us.”
They are emboldened by the lack of accountability from Congress or the international community. It’s absolute authoritarianism. Which means it’s up to us, Americans of all kinds who oppose endless war and regime change, to speak out forcefully and ensure public opposition to Trump’s harmful actions.
I am running for reelection to Congress because I believe we have a responsibility to put a check on the President’s illegal acts of war and play a role in forging a new US foreign policy, one where we seek diplomacy around the world rather than illegal and destabilizing invasions. One where we are attentive to the needs of our world while staying focused on the many issues we face at home.
CONTRIBUTETrump is playing with the lives and futures of countries like Venezuela because he believes might makes right. We have to reject it. We have to fight back and win.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
