WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie officially concluded his service on the Council of the District of Columbia, following his previously announced resignation at the Council’s final legislative meeting in December.

After more than thirteen years and 4,968 days of service, Councilmember McDuffie leaves office reflecting on a tenure defined by results-driven leadership, principled advocacy, and a deep commitment to the people of Washington, D.C.

“Serving on the Council has been the honor of my lifetime,” said McDuffie. “I am deeply grateful to my colleagues, our dedicated Council staff, advocates, and the residents in all eight wards who placed their trust in me and pushed us to meet the moment with urgency and purpose.”

First elected in 2012, Councilmember McDuffie brought to the Council a perspective shaped by growing up in the District and by a working-class upbringing that instilled in him the dignity of work and a belief that government should deliver real, tangible results for people. Throughout his tenure, he championed policies to expand economic security and opportunity, strengthen public safety and justice, protect civil rights, and preserve and create affordable housing, securing hundreds of millions of dollars in investments for District communities.

As Chair of the Committee on Business and Economic Development, McDuffie played a central role in modernizing the District’s economy, supporting small and local businesses, and advancing inclusive economic growth. His leadership helped guide the District through periods of significant challenge while advancing reforms to make government more responsive, transparent, and equitable.

“The work is not finished,” McDuffie added. “While this chapter closes, my commitment to serving the people of Washington, D.C., remains steadfast. I leave this office proud of what we accomplished together and energized for the work ahead.”

Councilmember McDuffie expressed his sincere appreciation to District residents across all eight wards, his Council colleagues, and the many public servants and community leaders who partnered with him throughout his time in office.
