Asbestos kills.
Exposure to asbestos -- even in the form of tiny fibers too small to be seen with the naked eye -- causes deadly lung disease and cancer.1
There's no truly safe level of exposure to asbestos.2 The best way to protect our health is to outlaw the use of asbestos fibers in all their forms.
This new legislation would prohibit the use of asbestos across the U.S.3
Because asbestos fibers are resistant to heat and corrosion, they were widely used as insulation before we came to understand their health risks.
Now we know better. Breathing in asbestos fibers damages the delicate tissue of the lungs, causing a buildup of scar tissue that often turns lethal. Asbestos exposure can also lead to lung cancer and other kinds of deadly lung tumors.4
Being exposed to asbestos for a duration as short as a few days has caused deadly lung disease in humans.5
Continuing to allow asbestos to be imported, processed, and used in the U.S. just doesn't make any sense -- especially since we have far safer ways to insulate our homes and buildings nowadays.
Support legislation to restrict the use of asbestos by sending a message today.
The EPA already restricts one type of asbestos fiber, but to protect our health, we know we need to go farther.
The best time to phase out asbestos completely would have been decades ago, when we first discovered its health risks.
But the next-best time is right now -- and now is our chance.
