Dear John,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had fantastic holidays otherwise--a Happy Hanukkah, a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwanzaa--and that you were able to rest and recharge.
My December was filled with events and meetings, teaching, a much-needed break, family, friends, and planning our legislative portfolio for the upcoming 2026 Legislative Session which starts soon--on Wednesday, January 14th.
I'll be back in touch with a full list closer to the 14th. In the meantime, I can tell you that I plan to carry the maximum number of bills allowed--a full docket! I'll be focusing mostly on housing, energy, education, recovery homes, voting and elections, as well as some consumer protection bills. You can track my office's introduced legislation here [[link removed]] .
Before the holiday break, I attended several events.
It was an honor to earn the High Impact Policy Leadership Award from the Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce at their Annual Gala on December 2nd. The VACC does such important work for Asian-owned businesses in Virginia and Henrico, especially in promoting small businesses. I really appreciated the recognition!

That same week while I was in school, I was glad that members of my staff could attend the Henrico County Public Schools Annual Legislative Luncheon and the Richmond Area Chapter of Military Officers of America Association (RAC-MOAA) 18th Annual Virtual Legislative Forum. We're always eager to know more about our constituents and stakeholders' legislative priorities!

I am grateful to the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials for having me as their keynote speaker at their Fall Conference. We have to prioritize attainable housing! It’s key to Virginia's remaining a good place for families, young people, workers, and business.

On December 15th, Neighbors for Change hosted Delegate-elect May Nivar and I for a wonderful community gathering in the Wyndham neighborhood. I discussed my legislative priorities for the upcoming session, answered questions, and ate some delicious cookies!

Later that week, the Hamkae Center hosted me and some other legislators at their RVA Townhall [[link removed]] . We talked about how to ease the housing shortage and improve K12 education, and what can be done at the state level to protect our immigrant community members.

Then, on Monday, January 12th at 7:00pm , don't miss our annual Western Henrico Session Send Off. [[link removed]] It will be at WayGone Brewery (10612 Patterson Avenue), and the full Western Henrico General Assembly Delegation will be there! Come hear about our legislative priorities and help us raise some funds before we're prohibited from fundraising during Session. RSVP here. [[link removed]]

This will be my last monthly newsletter for a while. Starting the first week of Session, I'll be sending these out weekly!
If you need anything, want to discuss any of my legislative priorities, share an opinion, make a scheduling request, or if you’d like me to come and share a legislative update at a community or organization meeting, please do not hesitate to contact my office at [email protected] [[email protected]] .
I am also preparing resolutions to celebrate notable achievements of residents of the 16th District and memorial resolutions for members of our community that we lost this past year. If you know of a member of our community that you would like to recommend to be honored, please email me at [email protected] [[email protected]] .

Thanks so much for your support!
Yours in service,
Schuyler VanValkenburg, 16th District
