I'm reaching out to update you on the latest developments
regarding President Trump's deployment of unmarked secret police
against protesters in cities across our country.

Despite the terrifying images and stories coming out of
Portland, Oregon where people have been subjected to excessive
use of force by federal officers and thrown into unmarked vans
without being told what crime they have committed, Trump
announced last night he is preparing imminently to expand federal
police deployments to Chicago, IL and Albuquerque, NM. And the
president has named Baltimore as one of the cities that could be
next.

Local officials, including the Mayor of Baltimore, are concerned
that these actions will inflame the situation in their cities --
endangering more lives -- just as in Portland. Trump wants to
portray himself as someone who is bringing "law and order" when,
in fact, his sick strategy appears designed to provoke and
escalate chaos and violence.

That's why this week I joined with Senators Merkley, Wyden and
others to introduce urgent legislation that would prohibit
President Trump, and all future presidents, from deploying
unmarked federal police on the streets of American cities in
disregard of the wishes of local elected officials.

Cities like Baltimore DO need federal support -- just not the
kind Trump is interested in providing. Municipal budgets have
been decimated by COVID-19 and are badly in need of increased
federal funding for schools, transportation and housing
-- support that President Trump and his Senate allies have been
BLOCKING.

Instead of addressing the very real challenges facing struggling
Americans, Donald Trump has responded in a uniquely un-American
way -- by declaring war on our cities.
