Because of Trump and his allies in Congress, millions of Americans are about to see their health care costs explode or lose coverage altogether.

On December 31, the Affordable Care Act tax credits expired.

In Cook County, 360,000 residents rely on ACA coverage. Ninety percent depended on these tax credits to afford their insurance. Now many are facing premiums that double or triple overnight.

We know exactly who bears the brunt of these cuts: working families, seniors on fixed incomes, people managing chronic conditions, and communities that have already faced too many barriers to care.

This didn’t happen by accident.

Donald Trump and his allies have spent years attacking the ACA: cutting subsidies, weakening Medicaid, and pushing costs onto states and counties.

On Wednesday, I joined Congressman Krishnamoorthi and health leaders to urge Congress to extend the credits and protect the services our residents rely on.

Under the ACA, we built a nationally recognized public health system that delivers world-class care to everyone, regardless of income, ZIP code, or insurance status.

And we will fight to protect it.

This year, we:

  • Added $320 million to reserves with no new taxes or fees

  • Grew the permanent behavioral health workforce almost 40%

  • Increased public health funding by 15%

  • Expanded our partnership with the University of Illinois, creating joint clinical programs across 16+ specialties, growing medical education and advancing research

We will continue providing care to all who need it and help patients navigate these coverage changes. We built this system. We will defend it. And we will fight every day to make sure families in Cook County can get the care they need.
