Pro-pot representatives have included language and amendments that would tie the hands of the FDA from preventing Big Pot from marketing its potent pot to kids and allow Big Pot access to banks and institutional investment.
These proposals would have disastrous impacts on health and safety for decades to come.
The Blumenauer Amendment would prevent any DOJ funding from being used to interfere in state legal recreational marijuana markets. This effectively prevents the FDA from enforcing safety standards because the FDA uses the DOJ to take enforcement action against companies that fail to comply with warnings from the FDA.
Over the last few months, we have seen the FDA issue numerous warnings to marijuana companies for making claims that their products could prevent or cure the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. If this amendment were to be adopted into law, the FDA would be powerless to take action against these modern-day snake oil salesmen.
Furthermore, allowing banking access would open up direct access to Wall Street investment into the sale and marketing of highly potent pot candies, concentrates, and vapes. With this obstacle out of its way, there will be little left to stop the industry from metastasizing into the next Big Tobacco.
