Tēnā koe Friend -
Kua tuku atu te hautapu i ngā pito o te motu, kua tākiri mai te tau
hou, ka pō, ka ao, ka awatea. Nō reira nau mai e ngā hua o te tau, tū
mai e ngā nui o te tau kia wini te Pāti Māori i tēnei pōtitanga hei te
paenga mai o te koanga me ngā manu o te tau.
It’s 57 days till election day and over the
weekend we had a great Te Tai Hauāuru launch
for Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and then a Rangatahi panel
acknowledging Matariki on Saturday night. Mariameno Kapa-Kingi was
also working to support whānau that were struggling with the floods up
while the rest of the team were out putting up election hoardings
throughout the motu.
We also had the momentous win [News]
by JT where Mike Hosking had to publicly apologise and Rawiri had his
first prerecorded televised debate for Waiariki. In this pānui, we
also continue south to Hauraki-Waikato to share more about Donna
Pokere-Phillips.
Hihiaua Cultural Centre
Last weekend, Donna Pokere-Phillips and I attended two events in
Whangarei to support Mariameno. The main event was held at Hihiaua
Cultural Centre. This event brought together a range of people and
had the support of the Harawira whānau.
This weekend Whangarei had the storm which meant whānau from
Kaitaia that had travelled to Auckland to support the march against
the Dome Valley Rubbish dump were stranded. Mariameno and many others
kicked in to support the whānau and here is a great testimony
from Wikatana Popata about the tautoko they received.
Ngā Kaupapa Here – Our Policies
You’ll remember that we have a whakapapa framework for this
elections policies based on the words of Rātana when in 1927 he said,
“māuiui whenua, māuiui tangata” and our response to that is: ‘oranga
whenua, oranga tangata’.
At our launch at Hoani Waititi we launched our first policy under
‘oranga tangata’, which is ‘whānau
first’ where we are claiming 25% of all COVID response funds for
Māori. This is both a procurement policy and a realignment policy
because government didn’t have a specific Māori response fund for
Māori post COVID. More policies will be shared each week during the
campaign.
Under ‘oranga whenua’ we’ve launched two policies: Freshwater
and Climate Change. Our freshwater policy focuses on our
whakapapa and rights to freshwater. We will continue the Māori Party
policy which this government has continue, Te Mana o te Wai and change
legislation to protect our wai.
Climate Change was launched at Debbie’s launch
in the weekend at Pariroa Marae, near Pātea. In short, we will stop
oil and gas exploration in 10 years and support clean research and
power generation. This is our chance to protect our mother – kia
tiakina a Papatūānuku.
Donna
Pokere-Phillips mō Hauraki-Waikato
Donna
was raised in Taranaki and both her parents whakapapa there and she
also has whakapapa to Tūwharetoa. Through her mother she links to the
Ngāti Mahanga tupuna, Te Awaitaia and has lived in Hamilton for 30
years. Her husband Terry is from Te Pūaha o Waikato and they have
five tamariki and their hapū of mokopuna keeps growing.
Donna’s background is in social justice and making sure the voice
of our people are heard. She has a Master in Law from Waikato
University and works hard to protect the rights of those that are
often forgotten. She will was part of a wider group of people that
were successful in stopping the Armed Response Teams trials. Check
this parody
that Donna’s team has created to tell a story of how Māori lost our
land.
