This morning, Donald Trump’s Department of Defense abducted Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife. In doing so, Trump has launched a war of choice to bring regime change in Venezuela and declared that the U.S. will ‘run’ the country and control its oil production until a new government is established. All of this was done without proper authorization, without consultation with Congress, and without a clear plan to protect regional stability. That’s a direct violation of the Constitution and Congress’s sole authority to declare war.
Enough is enough. We reject U.S. involvement in dumb wars, yet our leaders continue to funnel taxpayer money into bloated defense budgets and entangle us in conflicts abroad while ignoring the lack of good jobs and high costs for Americans at home. As a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, I refuse to stay silent while presidents wage war in the dark.

I first ran for Congress in 2003 in protest against the War in Iraq. I learned early what happens when Congress surrenders its power and lets lies and money drive us into endless conflict. I won’t back down now. It’s time to cut waste from the Pentagon budget and invest in programs that benefit the American people, such as Medicare for All, $10-a-day childcare, and building new affordable homes.
