BREAKING: Yesterday, Donald Trump publicly announced that the Justice Department will be sending hundreds of federal law enforcement agents into cities to beef up local police departments. And one of those cities is right here in Albuquerque.

To put it bluntly: At a time of national uproar over police brutality and urgency for criminal justice reform, President Trump has decided to retaliate against these public cries for help by further antagonizing civilians using increased authoritative force and violence.

In response to those across the country demanding justice for systemic racism within our police establishments, Trump has executed this federal law enforcement operation, (known as Operation Legend) under the guise of seeking "law and order" to address urban crime.

But make no mistake, this operation is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate our citizens and disrupt the free exercise of their democratic rights to protest.

We've already seen the abduction of protesters in Portland, Oregon by federal officers earlier this week. And now, with Operation Legend officially ordered by Trump, it's only a matter of time before New Mexicans are forced into silence. Trump’s authoritarian tactics have no business here.

While Trump continues to terrorize our communities and oppress those who dare to speak out against public authority, I want to assure you that I am determined to do everything I can as Secretary of State to empower the voices of New Mexicans, to defend our democracy, and to not let the Trump administration’s fear-mongering affect our elections. We must fight back with our ballot and end the tyranny of Trump and his administration.
