Unemployment benefits are set to expire for millions of Americans out of work due to COVID-19.

As deaths from COVID-19 near the 150,000 mark and layoffs continue to skyrocket, working families are still in desperate need of relief. Now, the Senate is facing a deadline, and we only have until July 31st to pass the next emergency COVID-19 relief package, also known as the HEROES Act. Here’s what you should know about the bill:

The House-passed HEROES Act will help take the burden of this crisis off of working families by ensuring that laid-off workers keep their health insurance and get emergency unemployment benefits. It also forces OSHA to issue strong infection control plans for all workplaces, and prevents employers from retaliating against workers who report violations or sanitation concerns.

The HEROES Act also includes $1 trillion in vital support for state and local governments that are on the front lines every day working to stop the spread of the virus while providing essential services we all rely on.
