RSVP To Greet Greta Thunberg
Date and time of this event is not yet finalized. Between early morning on Tuesday August 27 and late Wednesday afternoon August 28 are most likely.
Greta Thunberg will be arriving in NYC in the coming days and we are very excited to welcome her warmly to the United States and our great city after her arduous trip across the Atlantic. We are sure she’s going to be exhausted and we want to welcome her with some great positive energy while ensuring her comfort and safety. Will you join us?
Timing is highly variable: Because of tides and weather, Greta’s exact arrival time is very hard to predict. As the boat approaches, we’ll have more detail on her likely window of arrival. Unlike a regular demonstration or protest, which has a set start time, this welcome event will not!
Please understand that we will likely only be able to give you 2-3 hours’ notice. It is thus important that you RSVP so we can send you timely updates.
9/20 Climate Strike
Join the worldwide demand for climate action taken by each and every one of us. The month of September will be a storm of climate events, including a rally outside the CNN Climate Town Hall (Sep 4); public engagements by Greta Thunberg, Naomi Klein, and others; the first installment of 350Brooklyn's own Brooklyn Public Library series (Sep 18); the massive strike on September 20; and much more.
There is so much happening and we need your help with social media, tabling, marshaling, and more to pull it all off.
Send an email to [email protected] let us know how you want to be involved.

350Brooklyn @ Brooklyn Public Library: Local Strategies for a Livable World
September 18, 7pm Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza, Info Commons Lab
Together with the Brooklyn Public Library, 350Brooklyn will present a series of eight evenings, starting in September and running through May 2020, designed to help Brooklynites get up to speed on the climate crisis and what we in our borough can do.
The fall series begins on September 18 at 7:00pm with "The Big Green Picture: Strategies for a Livable World." The forum will lay out the landscape of climate progress and challenges here in New York. Our city and state are setting the pace with historic laws aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, cars, and industry. Yet the fossil fuel industry keeps rolling out new pipelines and other infrastructure intended to lock us in for at least a generation. And some communities bear a much heavier burden than others. What's been achieved, and where do we go from here?
NYU Associate Professor and Sierra Club Conservation Chair Lisa DiCaprio will give an overview of city, state and national legislation on climate, while environmental justice journalist Yessenia Funes will examine the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on communities of color. Kim Frazcek, who directs the Sane Energy Project, will map out the spread of new fracked gas infrastructure across our state and the movement to end this buildout while promoting alternative energy. 350Brooklyn co-leader Sara Gronim will moderate.
350Brooklyn stalwarts: We need your help in getting out the word about this series! We need help reaching media outlets, so if you know anyone who works in media, please put us in touch. We have 1,500 postcards about the series to give out. Let us know if you can help with that as well -- at farmers markets, community centers, you name it. We have a long list and need help reaching these locations. Please email us at [email protected] to let us know how you'd like to pitch in.
As our fight against the Williams pipeline moves into the fall, the stakes continue to rise. National Grid, claiming a gas shortage despite bountiful evidence to the contrary, continues to hold more and more small businesses and residents hostage, denying new gas hookups in an attempt to manipulate Governor Cuomo into pushing through this senseless project. The Public Service Commission, whose job it is to keep watch over our monopoly utilities, has launched an investigation into National Grid’s claims and the appropriateness of its actions, and the results should be out soon. A huge thanks to Assemblyman Carroll and Colton and Councilmember Espinal for helping to keep the pressure on both National Grid and the PSC.
In related news, members of 350Brooklyn travelled to Staten Island last week to testify against National Grid’s proposed rate hikes, arguing that the utility has no right to raise rates on customers in order to pay for fossil fuel infrastructure. No to business as usual. No to a fossil-fueled future. Yes to renewables and energy efficient heat pumps!
350Brooklyn takes local action to solve the climate crisis. We are an all-volunteer organization and welcome people of all backgrounds, skills, and availability. Interested in volunteering?
