Donald Trump is rage tweeting again, and it’s about to get us into a war with Iran. Don’t let him do it [ [link removed] ].
Posting on social media at 3am, when he’s even less rational than usual, Trump said that if Iran responded violently to anti-government protests currently sweeping the nation, that “America will come to their rescue” and that we were “locked and loaded.”
Making unhinged threats when you’re half awake is incredibly stupid, even for Trump, and he could sleepwalk us into a potentially devastating war. He needs to stop, or Congress needs to do it for him, using its powers from the Constitution and the War Powers Act.
Yes, the leaders of Iran are just plain awful, and it’s understandable that the people of Iran (and elsewhere) want change. But Trump riding in like a drunken cowboy shouting threats at the bar is not going to help.
First, it’s just plain stupid, because it allows the Iranian government to position the protests as “Iran vs America” rather than “crappy government vs the people” -- something that could actually draw support away from the protests.
Second, it’s not at all clear what the hell Trump would actually do to “come to the rescue.” Yes, we have military forces in the area, but they’re designed to defend American interests, and if necessary, to launch offensive strikes that do a lot of damage. They’re not in a position to suddenly materialize at protests just in time, like the non-drunken cowboy rescuing the damsel in distress who’s been tied to a railroad track. And making promises like this could fill protesters with false information and expectations and get a whole lot of them killed.
Finally, there is the reality that Iran either has nuclear weapons, or is close to having them (in spite of Trump’s lies to the contrary). Regardless of how we feel about its government, the reality is we need to tread carefully here.
Add your name, and demand that Trump stop dragging us into war with Iran, and that Congress do whatever it can to stop him. [ [link removed] ]
