Tax Pro Tips

Welcome to the 2026 filing season, Minnesota tax professionals!

Mark Krause here, your Tax Professional Outreach Coordinator. I look forward to supporting you during this busy time of the year. Contact me <[email protected]> when you cannot find answers to your Minnesota tax questions or when you have suggestions on how we can make your life easier.

Every Thursday from now until May, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will send current and timely tax tips we hope you’ll find useful in your practice. We will archive two years of tax pro tips on the Tax Pro Education webpage [ [link removed] ]. Look for the new Tax Pro Tips Archive menu.

As you prepare for the upcoming filing season, I’d like to share these important reminders with you:

* If you missed the 2026 Filing Season Update for Tax Professionals [ [link removed] ] webinar in December, you can attend the January 14 session at 9 a.m. Central Time. [ [link removed] ]
* Renew your PTIN [ [link removed] ] and verify that the correct number is in your software control files. We have begun penalizing tax preparers that continually send in returns with invalid PTINs.
* Ensure you have a Written Security Information Plan [ [link removed] ] in place. If you experience a data breach, call us immediately at 651-556-4961 or email [email protected] <[email protected]>
* Review the Minnesota standards of conduct [ [link removed] ] to ensure you are complying with state law. If you do not follow these standards, we may penalize or sanction you.
* We will now accept 2025 amended state tax returns electronically if your software vendor allows it. More information coming soon in a future tax pro tip.
* Before contacting us with client-specific issues, ensure you have a current POA [ [link removed] ]on file, your client is with you, or the authorization box is checked on filed Forms M1 or M1PR for tax year 2025. Remove POA authorizations that are no longer necessary by submitting Form REV184r [ [link removed] ].
* The Tax Year 2025 Tax Professional Desk Reference Chart will be available on our website [ [link removed] ] soon under the "For Tax Preparers" section.
