The Trump administration’s newly-proposed homeless shelter rule explicitly encourages discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
According to Vox News, “the proposed rule encourages women’s-only shelter staff to use a visual appraisal of a woman’s appearance to judge whether that person is woman enough to use the facility.”
The rule is sure to put trans women -- and cis women who present as masculine -- in harm’s way. With 1 in 5 trans Americans facing homelessness at some point in their lives, moving to block their access to shelters in the middle of a pandemic is a gross and dangerous assault on human rights.
