Hi friend,

Finance Ministers of the world’s richest countries came together at the weekend, only to bury their heads in the sand.

$92 million dollars a day is spent on debt repayment rather than saving lives in the middle of a global pandemic. Is this acceptable during this global pandemic? The G20 seem to think so.

But we do not.

Sarah-Jayne Clifton, Director of Jubilee Debt Campaign said after the Finance Ministers meeting:

"The G20 have allowed lenders to keep being paid billions of dollars every month, diverting money away from the urgent task of tackling the health and economic crises. It is critical that world leaders step up and ensure more debt cancellation is agreed this year.”

Over 800,000 people signed the petition to drop debt and save lives. Thousands of us wrote letters to our MPs, shared the petition and took to social media.

Despite all of this, the G20 Finance Ministers failed to build on commitments made earlier this year where they pledged up to $12 billion in debt suspension.

The G20 must act. The next opportunity to influence their decisions will be in October, and we will be getting ready. Building coalitions, organising, and making sure our message is loud and clear.

Drop Debt. Save Lives.
