Months before starting, Facebook's Oversight Board is already letting us down. Accountable Tech
Friend,

When Facebook announced it would create an independent Oversight Board to review posts containing misinformation or fake news on its platform, many of us were skeptical.

The decision to even launch such a board followed a spate of bad press and frustrations that Facebook’s lack of oversight was putting profits over people. While the Oversight Board has promised to focus on some of the most challenging issues across the platform, we should not assume that it will, or even can.

In the past, Mark Zuckerberg has done a terrific job avoiding responsibility for the spread of fake news, hate speech, and harassment online. He’s deflected questions from Congress over and over again, and made promise after promise that’s added up to very little. But we cannot allow this board to become another winning publicity stunt for Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook at the cost of our democracy.

That’s what Accountable Tech does. We know that social media companies are at the heart of what we read, see, and view, and we push for policies that don’t reward bad behavior.

The tricky part is that the Oversight Board is toothless and at the complete mercy of Facebook executives and Mark Zuckerberg. The only posts it can actually review are those that have already been taken down and its decisions are non-binding, meaning Facebook can easily override them.

More to come!
