Over 700,000 people pay taxes in Washington, D.C., yet they have no say in how that money is spent on a national level. For years the people of D.C. have fought for national representation, and earlier this month, I was proud to join my House colleagues in finally answering these calls for action — by passing the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, which would grant the District full statehood.
 

But to no surprise, this bill has been met with staunch opposition from Republicans, particularly President Trump who argued, “You know it’s 100% Democrat, basically... so why would Republicans ever do that?”
 

This is not a matter of party; this is a matter of democracy. And the hundreds of thousands of D.C. residents deserve the same fair representation and recognition as every other U.S. state.
