Expiring ACA subsidies will affect these Americans most
The ACA subsidies are on track to expire at the end of the year, with millions of Americans set to see their healthcare premiums skyrocket because of it. What are our Representatives doing when Iowans need them the most? The answer; anything but their jobs. |

Hey folks! Rita Hart here. |
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and I hope you have an even better New Year’s! |
In addition to the holidays, we at the IDP along with Democrats all around the state are also celebrating Renee Hardman’s win in the special election for Senate District 16! Renee’s victory ensures the Republican supermajority will stay broken, and it proves that the blue wave we’re working towards next November is on track to become a reality. |

Unfortunately, I do have some troubling news to go along with our end-of-year festivities and successes. Republicans in the United States House and Senate failed to agree on extending the ACA credits, meaning that healthcare premiums for millions of Americans will see drastic increases in January. |

More than 117,000 Iowans are at risk of losing their coverage and families will see their health care premiums increase by an average of 114 percent. Real Iowans’ stories back up these statistics. Angela Petsche, who works at the Crescent Community Health Center in Dubuque, said many who rely on the ACA are worried about whether they’ll still be able to afford rent after the price hikes. Grace Calvert, an Iowan with brain cancer, could lose access to her treatments if the subsidies fall through. Beth Hoffman, a farmer and writer in Monroe County has already seen her premiums increase by 50%, a rate that could skyrocket if her income climbs any higher.

Iowa Republicans’ New Year’s resolution seems to be to leave working folks in the dust. It is getting harder and harder to make ends meet and Republicans are not doing anything to lower costs. Iowans deserve better. We need to elect leaders with good ideas and who appreciate the challenge of a good debate in front of the voters.
