John, this year has been exceptionally challenging.

In Gaza, winter brings a further struggle for survival for people who are reeling from over two years of violence. Families are living in makeshift shelters, exposed to rain, wind and freezing nights with little more than plastic sheets for protection. Every hour counts—without safety, shelter and warmth, winter will turn a dire humanitarian emergency into an even greater tragedy.

In Ukraine, millions are struggling to stay warm with depleted resources and little to no savings to carry them through the cold months. Drone and missile strikes are taking an even heavier toll this year. Civilian casualties have surged dramatically in 2025, while widespread destruction of homes and critical infrastructure has left communities exposed to freezing temperatures.

And in Sudan (where I just returned from), humanitarian needs have more than doubled, with nearly 25 million people in need of assistance. This conflict continues to kill thousands of people—and leave even more without homes, without food and facing terrifying levels of violence.

With more people displaced from their homes than ever before, we cannot look away. We must act—just as the IRC has done for more than 90 years.
