Clearinghouse on Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention

quarterly research digest on vmmc
july 2020

Dear Colleague,

The latest issue of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention. This issue covers articles published from 1 April to 30 June 2020.

Links are provided to the full text of articles that are open access. For additional information on VMMC, search the Clearinghouse’s Resource Library.

Featured Articles

  • A systematic review and meta‐analysis found strong, consistent evidence over 32 years that VMMC reduces the risk of HIV infection among heterosexual men.

  • A pilot referral system demonstrated the feasibility of linking young VMMC clients to sexual and reproductive health services at youth centres.

  • In a randomised trial, VMMC clients and providers found post-operative two-way texting a highly acceptable alternative to in-person reviews.

Other articles featured in the digest address the effects of VMMC and other HIV services on cervical cancer incidence and mortality; the use of the Unicirc and ShangRing devices to perform adolescent male circumcision; an investigation of a rare but serious complication of adolescent male circumcision; men’s perceptions, understanding, and experiences of VMMC in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa; and the relationship between masculine norms and healthcare-seeking behaviour among men in a VMMC programme in the Dominican Republic.

Best regards,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
