Dear Friend, December 31, and we are in that annual season of mixed emotions. New Year’s Eve is famously celebratory. Nevertheless, the mood is reflective, as we are caught between a melancholy nostalgia and the hope of new beginnings. We are steeped in media stories of the “best of” and “worst of” 2025. Robbie Burns’ Auld Lang Syne will be sung, or at least heard over the airwaves. Some of us will link arms as we sing the words of the Scottish bard, and we will be a bit teary. For the most part, it is too late to do anything about the year that was. Over the holidays, some, even in my family, have said with regret, “I voted Liberal. For the first time… I feel awful about it.” We cannot change the results of the 2025 election. Overall, it could have been a lot worse. We look to 2026 with some apprehension. As we face the upturned world of geopolitical unrest, we pray for peace and for rapid humanitarian responses where most needed, whether in Ukraine, Gaza, or Sudan. As leader of the Green Party, I look forward to a year of new beginnings for our movement: for the upcoming leadership race, for the ongoing work in Parliament where I will remain, and run again to ensure our Green voice stays constant. We are that respectful and vigilant opposition so desperately needed now. We will demand accountability, and press to achieve climate justice. Much has been accomplished since the election. As our sole Green MP, I have done more than any other party and more than much larger parties to push back on the assault on climate policies and the attack on refugee rights. Where Carney pledged to protect our foreign aid spending, it has been cut instead, as has the position of a Cabinet Minister for International Development. I have called out the assumption that it no longer matters if we ignore human rights to get trade deals with bullies and tyrants. I have called out our new government’s casual disregard for Indigenous rights and its reversal of what was once described, admittedly overblown, as a “feminist foreign policy,” while also putting forward practical ways we keep “elbows up” to protect our economic sovereignty. We keep punching above our weight. And thanks to our thousands of supporters across Canada, we are within a hair’s breadth of paying off all our campaign debt. It is now 90% paid off! Astonishing!! In the next few hours, with your help, we can bring that number down to zero and cross the bottom line to a bank account with savings to invest in a better year ahead. It is not too late, right now, to make that difference in 2025. There is no other way to catch this brief moment in time between old and new.
