January 1st marks the new year and a new challenge: Dry January. This is the time to reset and renew after an indulgent holiday season. Dry January is a one-month sobriety challenge where participants abstain from drinking alcohol for 31 days. The goal is to cleanse the body, adopt healthy new habits, and reevaluate one’s relationship with alcohol.
Yes, just one month can bring about many physical and mental health benefits according to this Healthline article, including repaired liver damage, decreased risk of heart disease, improved sleep, and weight loss. The decision to participate in Dry January can be a personal choice or group effort. Either way, if you decide to take the challenge, consider the following tips to help you plan for success:
• Remove any alcohol from your home and other areas you may frequent
• Load up on non-alcoholic beverages, such as water, seltzers, teas, and juices
• Avoid events and locations where drinking is prevalent, like bars, parties, and sporting events
• Establish your support group by letting your inner circle know your plans
• Forgive yourself if you slip up. Tomorrow is another day to try again.
“Dry January is an opportunity for individuals to reset, refresh, and re-evaluate their relationship with alcohol,” said Illinois Liquor Control Commission Executive Director, Lisa Gardner. “Every day you choose clarity and wellness is a win. Most importantly, this is a personal journey. Take this time to shape your new life in the new year. Best of luck!”
