Dear Friend,
As the year winds down, threats loom for animals in the realm of agriculture and the treatment of animals.
Supporters of the Save Our Bacon Act in Congress are advancing legislation that would override state animal-welfare laws and toss out humane standards adopted under state law, no matter how extreme or abusive their practices. The SOB Act, as we call it, would erase voter-approved reforms like California’s Proposition 12 and impose a federal race to the bottom.
From the perspective of a humane economy, this would be a colossally large step backward in our campaign to create a cage-free future in American agriculture.
Instead of allowing markets to reward higher standards and innovation, the SOB Act would wipe out the role of states in agriculture policy and negate the votes of millions of Americans who approved these changes in fair elections. It would penalize farmers who invested in humane systems, undermine states’ rights, and distort competition by favoring entrenched players.
The Center for a Humane Economy is working to stop this legislation because cruelty should not be protected by the federal government or made immune from democratic action. Markets should evolve toward better practices—not be frozen in place by congressional fiat.
But the forces pushing this bill are powerful, coordinated, and well-financed. They are betting that attention will fade and that resistance will weaken as the year ends.
That’s why this moment matters.
The support we receive now will determine how forcefully we can confront this threat—educating lawmakers, mobilizing allies, and making the economic case against rolling back humane standards.
We are asking you to help us meet the moment and secure a $25,000 matching gift, doubling every contribution. Please make your year-end gift today. With your support, we can be ready—not just to respond to this threat, but to bury it once and for all. [[link removed]]
