As NhRP President Steven M. Wise announced today in our online seminar, two habeas corpus scholars and twelve North American philosophers with expertise in animal ethics, animal political theory, the philosophy of animal cognition and behavior, and the philosophy of biology have submitted amicus curiae briefs [[link removed]] in support of Happy’s legal personhood and right to liberty. Following an amicus brief filed [[link removed]] last week by Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe, they are the latest experts to call for freedom for Happy.

Released to a sanctuary, with her right to liberty recognized, Happy would be able to live in an environment similar to her natural habitat instead of a city and climate where elephants don’t belong.

Instead of solitary confinement in a barren enclosure in a tiny exhibit, she would have hundreds of acres to roam with access to natural water features, trees, shrubs and pastures . For the first time in many years, she would again enjoy not only elephant companionship, but the freedom to choose how to spend her time and with whom.
