This weekend, we lost a hero and fierce Georgia Democrat.

On Friday night, Congressman John Lewis passed away at the age of 80 years old, leaving behind a legacy of love, justice, and righteous protest that will resound in the work of generations to come.

Born in Troy, Alabama to parents who were sharecroppers, Mr. Lewis knew intimately the racism, segregation and violence of the era. As a young man, he led the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee and marched side-by-side with Martin Luther King Jr.

Mr. Lewis’ dedication to justice-making didn’t end there.

As a representative for Georgia’s 5th District in Congress, he pushed forward landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act, led a sit-in on the House Floor to demand Congress take action to end gun violence, and was arrested outside of the U.S. capitol building advocating for immigration reform.

John Lewis served as the conscience of our nation. He risked his life for justice. He was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to within an inch of his life for what he believed in. And above all else, he never lost hope or got discouraged.

As our nation grapples with existential threats to equality and justice both new and old, John Lewis' encouragement to cause “good trouble” has never been more necessary.

We will pick up the mantle and continue fighting for a nation that finally lives up to its founding ideals. We will honor his legacy by continuing to put it all on the line for voting rights, and by committing to speak out whenever we see something that is not right or not just.

The lives of so many Georgians and Americans were made better because of John Lewis. We are forever grateful.

May he rest in power.
