Dear John,
Great news! The House of Representatives just voted to strike down the Muslim ban.
Our three and a half year battle to end the ban for good is far from over, but this is a critical milestone. Together we have won court battles against the ban, only to be set back by the Supreme Court. And we have won the court of public opinion, but Congress had not acted decisively against the Muslim ban until now.
Ultimately, this victory wouldn't be possible without the activism of the Iranian-American community, our allies in other immigrant communities, civil rights groups, and the courage of legislators who listened to their constituents. The passage of the NO BAN Act solidifies the growing consensus that the Muslim ban is un-American and discriminatory. The reality is, if we had true leaders in the White House and Senate majority, the ban would already be a thing of the past. That makes it all the more important that we elect leaders this November who will uphold American values and end this ban once and for all.
But, there is even more good news! Also passing the House was Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s Access to Counsel Act, which would ensure that everyone at a U.S. port of entry has access to a lawyer. Rep. Jayapal's act is a bold response not only to the Muslim ban, but also to the outrageous treatment of Iranian Americans and Iranian nationals.
NIAC is proud to call Rep. Jayapal a friend and ally. For years, Rep. Jayapal has championed legislation to secure equitable immigration policies, and her efforts to fight for the rights of Iranian Americans who were outrageously detained as they sought to return home from Canada is why we are privileged to present Rep. Jayapal with NIAC's 2020 Equitable Immigration Champion Award at our Virtual Gala on July 30th.
We hope you can join us to honor Rep. Jayapal for all she's done for our own community and countless other immigrant communities in the fight to secure fair immigration. RSVP here >
Best,
Jamal Abdi,
