Laura was born in upstate New York, and she knew from experience that getting her birth certificate could take six or seven months.

She didn’t have that kind of time. When she called VoteRiders’ ID Helpline, the election was just a few days away.

A VoteRiders volunteer told Laura about a little-known option called an ID Petition Process, which allows for alternative forms of identification to request a free ID to vote. With VoteRiders’ guidance, Laura went to the local Department of Transportation office with the necessary documents and paperwork.

The clerk insisted she needed a birth certificate, but Laura was empowered with the knowledge and confidence VoteRiders had given her. She stood her ground and the clerk gave her a provisional ID — not the actual ID.

On Election Day, Laura checked her mailbox, and there it was, her voter ID. It had arrived in the nick of time! Laura took it to her polling place to cast her ballot.
