WIIS would like to bring two recent publications to your attention:

First, to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), Women In International Security (WIIS) and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Washington, DC launched an international essay competition—1325AndBeyond. Please find 1325AndBeyond: Winning Essays here. The essays in this volume underscore the global importance of the WPS agenda and present innovative ideas on how to move the WPS agenda forward. I hope you will share these essays widely and take their recommendations to heart.

Second, we would like to share the publication of The Gender and Security Agenda: Strategies for the 21st Century (London: Routledge, July 2020). The book examines the gender dimensions of a wide array of national and international security challenges and is the product of a two-year WIIS research project. This summer, Women's Foreign Policy Group (WFPG) and Women In International Security (WIIS) will co-host monthly virtual career development events. Throughout these events, participants will build upon important career development skills and connect with professionals in international affairs.

For Sama is an intimate and epic journey into the female experience of war. A love letter from a young mother to her daughter, the film tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her.

Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice– whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
