John,
As coronavirus cases surge, the President of the United States should be listening to our top public health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci -- not publicly undermining and attacking them.
President Trump has repeatedly ignored Dr. Fauci's advice throughout this public health emergency -- and now he's trying to pass the blame for his own abject failure of leadership.
This is dangerous. The Trump Administration is now circulating talking points to reporters attempting to discredit Dr. Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert.
A Biden Administration and a Democratic Senate will put science and facts first -- especially in the face of a pandemic like COVID-19. We can save lives and livelihoods during this crisis, but we need real leaders who will actually listen to the experts, not fight them every step of the way.
Unfortunately, President Trump is continuing down the wrong path: sidestepping the advice of experts like Dr. Fauci, threatening funding for schools that don't re-open, and forcing hospitals to report data directly to the Trump Administration, bypassing the Centers for Disease Control.
We know we need to defeat President Trump and his Senate GOP enablers in November. But in the meantime, we all have a part to play as we weather the storm posed by COVID-19. That includes social distancing and wearing a mask to protect ourselves and others. It also includes speaking out to defend our public health experts like Dr. Fauci from President Trump's attacks.
My best,
Dick Durbin
