Hi ,
I remember the first time a source humiliated me in public.
I was walking down a busy hallway at police headquarters in Spokane, Washington, when the chief stormed out of the executive offices and, at the top of his lungs, told me that my newspaper was a piece of excrement, that I was a crappy reporter and that everybody in the department thought I was a joke.
Sooner or later, most journalists face a moment like this — when someone in power tries to intimidate them. Knowing how to respond is crucial.
In my latest column for Poynter, I examine how responding at all is dicey. Power imbalances often favor the source. A public figure can walk away, kick the reporter out of the venue, and inspire others to mount an online harassment campaign. Clap back and it’s likely that the conflict will escalate and even become the main story. Even if there’s a clever quip to be made, it will not accomplish anything journalistic.

Poynter was built for moments like these. Journalists need support, and Poynter provides guidance to help them act ethically and with integrity.
When powerful people publicly belittle the press, they are telegraphing their disdain for anyone who asks questions. The way journalists respond — with composure, persistence and a record of the truth — helps the public see the role a free press plays in holding power to account.
Poynter’s Center for Ethics & Leadership helps hundreds of journalists each year navigate challenges like this with confidence and clarity.
There's just two days left to give to support Poynter during our year-end fundraiser. If you value our work, I encourage you to consider making a donation ([link removed]) . Each gift powers our nonprofit in 2026 and beyond.
Thank you for reading, and we are wishing you a restful winter season.
With gratitude,
