Their striking spring plumage is seen mostly in the heartland of our continent, on the Great Plains and the Mississippi Valley where they often forage in open fields and prairies, far from water. But in the wake of long-term population losses and accelerated declines within the past decade, these elegant plovers are now listed as an Orange Alert Tipping Point species in the latest State of the Birds report.
