#FreeAndSafe communities start with voting in your state attorney race. You have the power to fight mass incarceration by holding prosecutors accountable!

In just a few weeks, prosecutor and state attorney races will happen in communities in Florida and Michigan’s two most populated counties: Oakland and Wayne. These races are hotly contested and the winners will shape the local criminal justice landscape for the next four years. But YOU have the power to elect the state attorney that reflects your values and is committed to ending the epidemic of mass incarceration.

Today, Advancement Project National Office and our partners in Florida and Michigan will be holding two engaging events aimed at educating voters on how elected attorneys in these communities directly impact criminal justice and mass incarceration in our communities.

Florida

Advancement Project National Office Executive Director Judith Browne Dianis is teaming up with our partners at the Players Coalition for a discussion on the Orlando State Attorney Race at 4:30 pm ET/1:30 pm PT TODAY. Joined by former NBA Player Marquis Daniels and former NBA Head Coach Stan Van Gundy, we’ll discuss how the upcoming race impacts the 9th Circuit Court of Florida.

Register here for today’s event.

Michigan

Whether you live in Oakland or Wayne County or another county in the U.S. with an upcoming state attorney election, join us TODAY from 6 to 7:30pm ET/3 to 4:30 pm PT, for our “Power of Prosecutors: Know Before You Vote” virtual town hall where we will discuss the power of local prosecutors in our criminal legal system and their role in fueling our epidemic of mass incarceration.

We, alongside our partners ACLU Michigan, Michigan Liberation, FORCE Detroit, MOSES and Detroit Justice Center, will provide you an opportunity to learn about the role of prosecutors in the criminal legal system in an effort to ensure voters feel empowered before arriving to the polls. Join us on Facebook [facebook.com/advancementproject] or YouTube [youtube.com/advprojectdc] to get a deeper understanding of the issues at stake and the power of your vote to call for justice in YOUR community. Alongside Players Coalition Charitable Foundation members NFL players Duron Harmon, Christian Jones, Trey Flowers and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, we will share:

  • an overview of what powers the prosecutor has;
  • what demands local communities are calling for in this race - and others around the country; and
  • information about registering to vote and how to vote by mail.

RSVP today and share with your neighbors and friends.

P.S. Don’t forget! On Friday, July 24, Advancement Project National Office observes National Cousins Day. We’re encouraging our allies to use this opportunity to have critical conversations about racial justice issues with those cousins that are still on the fence. Consider calling or emailing a few of your cousins, or that one cousin – you know who – and share your perspective on race and racism in our country. Don’t know how or where to start? We’ve got you covered. Watch out for resources and tools on Friday as we collectively say #GetYourCousins.

Advancement Project National Office’s Justice Project proudly supports grassroots movements in communities of color that challenge racial criminalization and attack all aspects of the criminal legal system. We help local campaigns seeking not simply to reform, but to wholly dismantle systems that criminalize and incarcerate people of color in the name of “law and order.” We aim to help impacted communities define the terms and control the means by which safety is realized in their streets and neighborhoods and to re-imagine for themselves how “safety” is pursued.
