This year, we had yet another disastrous and eye-opening hurricane season. Hurricane Melissa’s wind speeds doubled in under 24 hours, and it rapidly turned into a devastating Category 5 storm – just before it hit Jamaica. Surging ocean temperatures from climate change are producing a trend of storms that rapidly intensify, multiplying risks in an already dangerous scenario. Melissa was the third Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic this year, a feat we've only seen once before since records began. Super-charged storms combined with higher storm surges from rising sea levels is a clear recipe for disaster. Hurricane Melissa showed us that, with hundreds of thousands of homes damaged and residents displaced. That’s why it’s more important than ever to be fighting for climate science and real solutions. Lives depend on it. While storms like Melissa rage, the United States government is making the situation worse. From firing scientists to cutting funding, the Trump Administration has severely weakened our systems for predicting, monitoring, and responding to hurricanes like the ones the Atlantic saw this year. Avoidable destruction and death are sure to be the result. This isn’t the time to pull back – as our seas warm and rise, fueling more intense, more dangerous, and more deadly storms.
