John, over 70% of congressional elections in the United States are uncompetitive in the general. That means the overwhelming majority of incumbents can get away with being out-of-touch, or out of line with the interests of their constituents, because their seat is safe.
Primaries are one of our only checks against this reality. But even in defeat, former incumbents like Eliot Engel still don’t understand their critical role. In a recent interview, he said: "I think [primary challenges] are something that should not be done." That’s ironic given Engel’s first term came after a primary challenge to an incumbent in 1988, so at one point, he understood.
Electing new leaders like Jamaal Bowman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sends a message to out-of-touch incumbents across the country: “your record matters.” Engel didn’t think his did – which is why his voting record was so out of line with the politics of his district. Without a primary, he would’ve faced no consequences for that.
But now, incumbents across the country who have grown too close to lobbyists, who vote against the interests of their people, and who bow to the whims of massive corporations have to think twice about their conduct. If they continue that behavior, they just might have their own Alexandria or Jamaal to contend with next cycle.
Our work is not over. Powerful structures are in place to protect incumbents like that, like the DCCC which raised over $40 million last quarter according to recent reports. That’s what we have to contend with if we’re going to replace out-of-touch incumbents with new, diverse, working-class leaders.
Our victories send shockwaves across the country every time. That’s because we’re fighting for something greater – for a democracy that truly stands for the diverse, working people of this nation.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
