Hi John,
Caregiving changed everything about my life: how I spend my days, what I value, and how I see community.
I am a caregiver for my autistic, nonspeaking teenage son with high support needs. I was also a caregiver for my late mom, who had dementia. Over the years, caregiving has taught me patience, creativity, and what it takes to hold a family together.
It has also shown me how many cracks there are in the system. I have seen the beauty in care, but I have also seen and lived the burnout. And here’s the thing I now recognize: Caregiving shouldn’t be a private duty. It’s part of the infrastructure that keeps society running, and it deserves recognition, respect, and real investment.
That’s why I was so thrilled to discover the Care Fellowship [[link removed]] – a program that gives both caregivers and people who receive care a voice, a community, and a sense of direction. As a Fellow in this program, I brought my two worlds together: my life as a caregiver and my past life as a copywriter and creative director. I wanted to learn how to tell my story and help others tell theirs in ways that could shift systems, policies, and hearts.
Participating in this program was transformative. Being part of a group of caregivers and care recipients created instant connection and understanding. We came from every age and background, but we all spoke the same emotional language. The program made us feel seen and gave us permission and encouragement to think bigger.
