Hi there –
Whether it’s Special Olympics World Games coverage or SportsCenter on ESPN, you’ve probably seen me covering events, sharing stories, and celebrating the athletes who make sports so powerful, unforgettable, and fun to watch.
But today, I’m writing to tell you about something important and very “special” to me: Any gift you make to Special Olympics before December 31 will be MATCHED 3X to help more athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) get off the sidelines and play inclusive sports. Are you with me?
Nothing I’ve covered in my career has moved me the way the Special Olympics World Games in Turin did this year. As a reporter, you try to stay composed. Do your job. Hold the microphone steady. But during those days in Turin, I found myself wiping away tears in between interviews – every moment felt so inspiring.
Years ago, the incredible Special Olympics athlete, Dustin Plunkett, said something I will never forget: “Sit with a Special Olympics athlete, and your life will never be the same.” After a decade of meeting athletes on-air and off-air, I can tell you he was 100% right.
The bear hugs. The honest conversations. The way athletes carry themselves with persistence, presence, and pride. The crowds cheering their names and dancing right along with them.
I’ve competed at the highest levels. As a journalist, I’ve covered the biggest stages. But what I had the honor to experience in Turin reminded me that true greatness has nothing to do with medals or records. It’s about strength, kindness, and the love and respect of a community, like Special Olympics, that sees and champions ALL OF US for who we are.
It’s the FINAL stretch of the year. Thanks to a 3X match offer powered by the Founding Partner of Special Olympics, The Coca-Cola Company, your donation will go three times as far to support amazing athletes and Special Olympics families. Please, if you can, give now >>
With gratitude,
