Dear fellow MoveOn member,
I saw my doctor recently, who gently suggested that at 79 years old, I should consider taking it easier.
"Donald Trump is 10 days older than I am," was my response. "And if he can cause this much mayhem every day, for this country and the world, the least I can do is cause a bit of good trouble for him."
She laughed, bless her, though she wasn't convinced.
But, John, I think that you, as a fellow MoveOn member, understand. We're in a national emergency—so we've got work to do.
The future of our country, democracy, and even of the American people is under threat. Trump and the people around him are extreme fanatics. To them, America is already engaged in a civil war. They view those who oppose them as their sworn enemies—against whom scorched-earth tactics are entirely justified.
That's why it's important that the 2026 midterms kick Trump loyalists out of office and finally put a stop to Trump's rampage.
The good news is when it comes to leading the resistance during dark times and paving the way for electoral victories, MoveOn is incredibly effective.
During the first Trump administration, MoveOn was an instrumental leader of the resistance—and played a key role in winning back control of the House of Representatives.
Now, we need MoveOn's leadership more than ever.
Can you chip in $9 right now to help MoveOn implement its midterm election program at the full scale that this moment demands, to end Republican control of the House and put a stop to Trump's authoritarian takeover? 2025 has been a devastating year, with Trump and his henchmen systematically dismantling our democracy and democratic institutions, and terrorizing our communities. They've rolled back civil rights and labor, consumer, and environmental protections. They've taken away access to health care and increased the cost of living for everyday Americans. They've engaged in relentless threats against anyone who dares criticize them or report the truth.
But I've watched MoveOn and its members show up, time and time again this year—just as we have for 27 years since MoveOn's founding.
MoveOn members showed up in force at No Kings Day events, powering the largest protest in modern U.S. history in October.
MoveOn members pressured Congress to fight back against Trump's worst abuses and supported communities under attack from him.
And MoveOn helped groundbreaking candidates and efforts sweep November's elections. Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race with over 50% of the vote.1 Mikie Sherrill won New Jersey's governor's race by double digits, and Democrats won big in Georgia, Maine, and Pennsylvania. All told, voters shifted toward Democrats in 99.8% of counties that held partisan elections.2 And in California, Proposition 50—which will help counteract Trump's effort to steal the 2026 election through gerrymandering in Texas and other red states—passed by a landslide.3
But 2026—and the crucial 2026 midterms—will demand far more from us.
The MoveOn team has shared some of the details of its midterm campaign plan with me, and I've got to tell you, it gives me hope.
MoveOn's electoral organizing—which reaches millions of people who might otherwise stay home—has been extraordinarily effective, especially in midterm elections under Republican presidents. Exactly the situation we face today.
In 2018, during the first Trump administration, MoveOn's "Real Voter Voices" program featured more than 2,000 personal appeals from voters in 100 congressional races. Voters heard directly from people who looked like them, lived near them, and shared their concerns. This program was pivotal in ending Republican control of Congress.
More recently, in the 2022 midterms, MoveOn ran the largest relational organizing program in the country and specifically recruited MoveOn members to mobilize people they knew personally to vote in the most critical states. Millions of MoveOn members mobilized voters in huge numbers, prevented a red wave—which is typical when a Democrat is in charge—held the Senate, helped win critical governor and secretary of state races, and helped defend progressive champions in the House. These actions contributed to the most successful midterm election in decades—bucking historic expectations, defeating many hardcore MAGA extremists, and defending democracy.
And, importantly, MoveOn has incorporated critical lessons from the 2024 election into its innovative plans.
In 2026, MoveOn could run the largest midterm campaign in its history—if we step up and support it. What happens on Election Day 2026 depends on the organizing that MoveOn is able to do in the next 11 months.
I believe that MoveOn is integral to helping our country reject Trump and Republicans' cruel agenda, restoring our rights, liberties, and the rule of law, and building a future where everyone can thrive. As difficult and frightening as things are right now, we have to remember that Trump is not all-powerful. His approval ratings are tanking. He's flailing on the economy. Jeffrey Epstein haunts him. Even Republicans are beginning to revolt against him.
A tyrant can exercise tyranny only insofar as the objects of his tyranny continue to allow it.
And we will absolutely not allow it.
Thanks for all you do.
