Boris Johnson has betrayed the British people. He promised to "take back control" and "keep the NHS off the table", but on Monday night over 300 of his MPs voted against amendments that would have done exactly that.
We have one last chance at stopping Donald Trump from getting his hands on our NHS. We need the House of Lords to step up and vote for amendments to give Parliament a final say on future trade deals and protect our NHS.
We're not going to sugarcoat it. In parliament on Monday night:
248 MPs voted to protect our NHS
337 voted against
260 MPs voted for parliamentary scrutiny of trade deals
322 voted against
How disgusting. MPs selling our NHS and our democracy down the river.
After months of campaigning for the Trade Bill to be amended, we are furious at this betrayal. We know this is infuriating and disappointing for you.
We are so grateful for all of your amazing action over the last few months and we share your frustration at the news.
But we can’t stop now. The Trade Bill is set to be debated in the House of Lords when parliament returns in the autumn. The House of Lords has the power to reject the Trade Bill as it stands and to protect our NHS.
Because of all your hard work, we're in a strong position to push the Lords to protect the NHS. Although last night’s vote did not go the way we had hoped, you've achieved a huge amount since the start of this campaign.
Because of you
36,000 emails were sent to MPs calling for amendments to the Trade Bill
Lots of MPs were pinned down in meetings and phone calls with your arguments
Labour, Green, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Liberal Democrat, DUP, SDLP and Alliance MPs all spoke passionately on Monday night, talking about emails from their constitutents in the last few days (that's YOU) and they voted to protect our democracy and our NHS
11 Conservative MPs voted against the government to stand up for Parliamentary scrutiny of trade deals - and we've heard others were wavering
We've been talking to our friends in the Trade Justice Movement, Global Justice Now, and Keep Our NHS Public about what happens next.
The House of Lords has a much better chance of amending the Trade Bill than the House of Commons with its huge Tory majority. Lords and peers are also less likely to be influenced by Tory whips.
And if the Trade Bill goes back, amended, to the House of Commons, there's a good chance some Conservative MPs will rebel.
Yesterday the Department for International Trade wrote back to We Own It on twitter (!) with a graphic saying 'The NHS is not for sale and it never will be'. If only they were telling the truth.
Thank you for everything you've done to heap pressure on your MP over the last few months. Now let's show the Lords how much we care about our NHS.
Not just clapping - LEGAL PROTECTION PLEASE.
Cat, Ellen, Pascale, Chris and Alice - the We Own It team
