Friend,

The disappearance and murder of U.S. Army soldier Vanessa Guillen is a disturbing, needless and cruel punishment upon her family, friends and community. One day before her family said she planned to formally report being sexually harassed, she went missing, never to be seen alive again.

I’m deeply troubled by the ongoing epidemic of sexual assault in the U.S. military. The Department of Defense failed Vanessa Guillen and they will continue to fail our brave servicemembers who risk their lives every day if we don’t act.

That is why I worked with the House Appropriations Committee to direct the Comptroller General to conduct a review of the Defense Department’s policy for reporting sexual assault and its effectiveness in protecting victims, as well as holding offenders accountable. I added language to the Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2021 in order to ensure this happens.

In 2019, 6,000 sexual assault cases in the military were reported, but only 300 of those cases were prosecuted. We have to keep fighting for justice -- sign your name in support of protections for our soldiers and bringing peace to Vanessa’s family.
