As 2025 draws to a close, it feels fitting to highlight the crucial work Green Party leader Elizabeth May has done this year to hold power to account.

While so many in Ottawa chase headlines, Elizabeth reads the fine print.

She reads every bill the government tables, line by line. And what she has been saying, to anyone who will listen, is that Canadians have real reason to be concerned.

What’s worrying is not one bill on its own. It’s the pattern. Bills that concentrate power in Cabinet, limit scrutiny in Parliament, and make it easier to sidestep the rules that protect people, nature, and Indigenous rights.

And once these powers are written into law, they do not disappear. The next government inherits them.

A healthy democracy depends on transparency and checks and balances. When a government treats those safeguards as inconvenient, it’s easier to sideline communities, weaken protections, and push through decisions Canadians would never accept if everything was out in the open.

That is why Elizabeth’s work in the House of Commons matters so much. She has been raising the alarm about these risks from the start. But one MP should not have to do this work alone.

We need more Green MPs who will ask the hard questions when everyone else is being told to vote yes and move on. We also need the capacity to respond quickly when the government moves fast, so Canadians hear what’s happening before decisions are locked in.
