As 2025 draws to a close, I’ve been thinking about what’s possible when people stand together. The Sentencing Project fights for a fairer, more just criminal legal system, ending extreme sentences, advancing second-look legislation, protecting youth, expanding voting rights, and producing research that shapes policy nationwide.

Our 2025 highlights:

Second-Look & Sentencing Reform

• Helped pass Maryland’s Second Look Act and contributed to Michigan Supreme Court rulings ending mandatory life-without-parole for emerging adults
• Supported sentencing reforms in other states and facilitated national collaborations to defeat increases in mandatory minimums

Voting Rights

• Protected access to the ballot for justice-impacted people
• Hosted a national convening and coalition calls connecting organizers, researchers, and impacted leaders

Youth Justice

• Supported diversion programs and policies limiting youth transfer to adult court
• Released groundbreaking research and hosted webinars that informed policy and shaped public conversations

The challenges are real. Rising incarceration and funding pressures threaten progress, and the stakes for youth could not be higher.
