Despite spending most of her career advocating for school vouchers and for profit charter schools while opposing federal mandates for public schools, sheâs now reversed her stance in order to blindly support President Trumpâs federal mandate to force public schools to prematurely reopen -- risking the lives of millions of children in a misguided attempt to boost the stock market and rescue President Trumpâs failing re-election campaign.
Children wonât be the only ones paying the price; teachers, bus drivers, janitors, administrative workers, and other school staff, many of whom fall into high-risk categories â 60 years or older, pre-existing medical conditions, etc. â will have to choose between risking their lives and risking their jobs. No one should have to make that kind of decision in the United States. This type of merciless, profit-focused Trump mandate, which sweeps working class families under the rug is unconscionable. Betsy Devos simply canât be bothered to care about the risks and decisions she will be forcing these families to make.
