Dear Friend,
Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced plans to gut national Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a regulation adopted in 2001 that now protects 45 million acres of America's national forests from industrial logging and other sources of harm.
Within months of Trump’s initial announcement, more than half a million Americans sent public comments to the Forest Service opposing the idea. The plan to undo the Roadless Rule is one of the most unpopular proposals we’ve seen in decades.
And yet, the Trump administration is poised to rescind Roadless protections. Earthjustice will go to court as many times as necessary to defend the Roadless Rule, protect our forests, and safeguard the wildlife that inhabit them.
For over 20 years and through multiple presidential administrations, Earthjustice and our partners have defended the Roadless Rule from multiple attacks.
When President Trump removed Roadless Rule protections from Alaska’s Tongass National Forest in 2020, Earthjustice sued. Our lawsuit helped convince the Biden administration to reinstate the Roadless Rule in the Tongass.

Why it matters: The Roadless Rule protects roadless areas in National Forests from most new roadbuilding and logging. That’s why the timber industry has repeatedly tried to destroy this rule.
What’s at risk:
- The Roadless Rule protects nearly a quarter of all national forest lands — sheltering hundreds of imperiled species.
- The Trump administration is already weakening the Endangered Species Act. Eliminating the Roadless Rule will fragment wildlife habitats and do even more harm to imperiled species.
- In the Tongass National Forest, eliminating the Roadless Rule would remove critical safeguards against industrial logging and roadbuilding from over 9 million undeveloped acres of the forest.
- Roads are known to increase wildfire ignition risk, with over 90% of wildfires occurring within a half mile of a road.
What Earthjustice is doing:
Earthjustice has successfully defended the Roadless Rule in court for decades, and we won’t back down now.
Your support is what allows Earthjustice lawyers to go to work every day and fight back against attacks on our environment. Time is running out to have your donation tripled by our $2:$1 match. Help us protect our forests, the wild places we love, and our future on Planet Earth.
