Our top five wins for vulnerable animals in 2025:

1. Freedom for former lab chimpanzees: 

After years of relentless advocacy, we helped secure the release of dozens of chimps who were being held at a government-run lab in New Mexico. After decades of suffering,  we’re overjoyed to see the chimpanzees settling in at Chimp Haven, a lush 200-acre forested sanctuary specifically designed to cater to the needs of chimps  formerly used in biomedical research, where they can finally experience a future beyond the confines of a lab.

2. Protecting Prop 12 and other state animal welfare laws: 

We continued to fight back against attacks on California's Prop 12, the strongest farm animal welfare law in the country, from a small portion of the pork industry that refuses to give up extreme confinement of farm animals. In addition, a court in Massachusetts upheld the constitutionality of Question 3, the state’s landmark 2016 ballot measure prohibiting cruel confinement of breeding pigs, egg-laying hens and calves raised for veal as well as the sale of meat and eggs that come from such confinement systems. Thanks to your support, we will continue to fight for more humane treatment of farm animals as long as it takes and no matter the challenge.

3. Progress toward ending animal testing and research: 

We celebrated the National Institutes of Health’s—the world’s largest funder of biomedical research—announcement that it is shifting away from prioritizing research on animals toward human-based technologies. Several other federal agencies, like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, also announced commitments to reduce animal testing.

4. Animals won big in the 2025 elections: 

We helped to elect two pro-animal candidates in Abigail Spanberger—the governor-elect of Virginia—and Mikie Sherrill—the governor-elect of New Jersey. Both candidates previously served in the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus. We worked to turn out compassionate voters for animals, and judging by the outcomes, it is clear voters want to see the end of animal cruelty, and we plan to harness this momentum to win big for animals in 2026!

5. A new, stronger name and identity as Humane World Action Fund: 

For over 20 years, we've been the nation’s leading animal protection political organization. You’ve known us as Humane Society Legislative Fund, but to maximize our impact and help even more animals in need, we changed our name to Humane World Action Fund.

Heading into 2026, we’re doubling down on our fight for political and policy changes to tackle the root causes of animal cruelty and suffering by ending animal testing, protecting iconic wildlife—like grizzly bears—from extinction, pushing for stronger farm animal welfare laws, and more. Every dollar you give before our deadline will fund this fight against cruelty and help us advance real and permanent policy changes for animals. Are you with us?
