Restaurants in Colorado and across the U.S. have been devastated by massive drops in revenue over the past few months. Nearly half of restaurant and bar employees have lost their jobs since February, and it's clear the road to a full economic recovery will be a long one.
This sector has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, particularly small, locally-owned restaurants and their workers -- and that's why I'm co-sponsoring the Real Economic Support That Acknowledges Unique Restaurant Assistance Needed to Survive (RESTAURANTS) Act. This bill will secure an additional $120 billion for payroll, rent, food, supplies, or the structural changes needed to allow safe outdoor seating.

We're not just talking about traditional sit-down restaurants. These relief funds will be made accessible to food trucks, food stands, food carts, saloons, taverns, caterers, inns, bars, and lounges. We will not, however, allow these emergency funds to be unfairly funneled to wealthy franchises with 20 or more locations.
A one-size-fits-all approach will not be effective in overcoming this once-in-a-lifetime public health crisis. The Paycheck Protection Program was a start, but it's clear our favorite neighborhood restaurants still need our help if they're going to survive beyond COVID-19. And this isn't just about the restaurant owners, it's about the jobs they create, the families they keep fed, and the community they foster inside their four walls.
