Though I deeply love our state, growing up in Mississippi wasn’t always easy. My twin sister, Michelle, and I were two of 18 Black students to first integrate Yazoo City High School, where I faced harassment ranging from students calling me racial slurs and beating me up, to teachers spraying me with fire extinguishers. Yes, even teachers.
When I helped lead a walkout demanding my school hire Black teachers, the superintendent retaliated by docking my GPA just as I was trying to go to college.
I grew in spite of those tough times to become the first Black Congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction and the first (and only) Black U.S. secretary of agriculture in our country’s history. When I wasn’t serving in public office, I got involved in leading multiple non-profit organizations that lifted vulnerable Mississippians up by providing loans, food assistance, and more.
My love for Mississippi runs deep, folks, in spite of our state’s troubling legacy. Because I’ve seen the progress that’s been hard won, and I know together, we can bring even more progress.
Mississippi has come so far. Now is not the time to turn back.
It’s 2020, and there’s still so much work left to do — but I believe in us. At the end of the day, I’m the only candidate in this race who openly and eagerly wants to move us forward, instead of glorifying the painful days of Mississippi’s past.
My opponent Cindy Hyde-Smith has joked about public hangings, endorses voter suppression, and even referred to the confederacy as “the best of Mississippi’s history.” Is that who we want representing us in the Senate?
I’ll promise you this: I’m ready and willing to work on both sides of the aisle to do what’s right for the people of Mississippi and guide us into a brighter future – one in which folks can afford health care, get a great education, find a promising career, and easily make their voice heard at the ballot box.
Mississippi is changing, and November is our chance to usher in even more change. Will you support my people-powered campaign today with a contribution? Any amount makes a difference in this race:
