Back the Blue

What to Know: Former House Speaker (and Right on Crime signatory) Newt Gingrich says that despite the publicity the “Defund the Police” movement gets, most Americans value safety and ordered liberty.

The TPPF Take: Defunding the police is a dangerous policy position.

“Defunding the police, whether through budget cuts or all out abolition as many on the left are calling for, can only result in less safe communities,” says TPPF’s Randy Petersen. “Cutting funding means less training, less innovation, and fewer police officers patrolling the worst neighborhoods. The law abiding poor will be the hardest hit as the police pull back from their communities for lack of resources.”

Short-Term Relief

What to Know: An appeals court says that short-term health insurance plans are legal, even if they don’t comply with the Affordable Care Act.

The TPPF Take: Short-term plans meet the needs of many American families right now.

“The court’s decision comes at a time when many Americans need affordable temporary options after losing their employer sponsored plan,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Short term insurance plans play a necessary role in filling the gaps and not leaving people exposed.”

A New Tool

What to Know: The media is now paying attention to which college programs and degrees truly prepare graduates for future jobs—now that the Department of Education is keeping score.

The TPPF Take: The U.S. Department of Education has begun releasing the typical earnings and debt by college program.

“This new data means that for the first time ever, a student interested in majoring in accounting can compare the typical earnings and debt of recent graduates from accounting programs across the country, for example,” says TPPF’s Andrew Gillen. “All this new data is available at the federal government’s College Scorecard website, and the Texas Public Policy Foundation has created a webtool that is more user friendly and customizable.”
