Esther shared her story with UNFPA Kenya.
“When girls succeed, entire communities begin to change,” shared Patrick . He runs the UNFPA Safe Space in Kenya where Esther turned to for care.
In Kenya, more than half of all girls still experience female genital mutilation (FGM), even though the practice has been outlawed. FGM is a brutal practice in which a girl’s genitalia are cut, pierced, or sewn and it often results lifelong health consequences, including PTSD, chronic infections, childbirth complications, and even death. For girls who refuse to be cut, the social cost of violence, rejection, and isolation can be devastating.
At just 14 years old, Esther fled her home to avoid undergoing FGM. She found safety at a UNFPA Safe Space where she was able to live and complete her education. Today, she is finishing her degree in veterinary medicine.
Esther was able to claim her future only because supporters like you believed in it.

Hira received career training at the UNFPA Safe Space.
UNFPA Safe Spaces are a refuge for girls, offering protection, counseling, education, and vocational training so they can build safe, independent futures.
Hira grew up in an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan. Forced into child marriage at 16, she endured years of abuse. When she gave birth to her daughter, she was taunted for not having a son. Not knowing how she and her daughter would survive, Hira packed her belongings and left.
At a UNFPA Safe Space, Hira received mental health counseling and vocational training. Today, she earns a living as a tailor and supports her daughter independently.
“Today, I feel stronger. I have work. I can support my child and I am no longer dependent on anyone.”

“When I feel sad, I come to the center, look in the mirror and tell myself: I am strong, I am resilient.”
11-year-old Usmaida has spent most of her life in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the world’s largest refugee camp and home to more than 1 million Rohingya refugees.
Refugees often have limited opportunities for education and employment, but your support helps fund youth centers and Safe Spaces where girls like Usmaida can find programs that help them thrive and grow.
Gifts from supporters like you have made the futures of Esther, Hira, and Usmaida brighter and has shown what is possible when girls are protected, educated, and empowered. Will you make a gift today to fund UNFPA Safe Spaces around the world? In 2025, donors have powered 1,300 Safe Spaces and, right now, your gift will be doubled to reach twice as many girls with care in 2026. [[link removed]?]
