Dear John,

My name is Norbert Byambo Kagosi. I am a Congolese peace activist and the coordinator of the Isingiro–Nakivale chapter of World BEYOND War. Since 2018, I have been living in Uganda as a refugee, after fleeing the Democratic Republic of Congo due to war, insecurity, and recurring violence.

I was born in a war zone. I grew up witnessing killings, displacement, and the daily suffering of civilians. For more than three decades, the people of the DRC have lived under the weight of a conflict that has caused millions of deaths, forced entire communities into exile, and left women, children, and young people exposed to extreme violence and fear.

Like many Congolese, I welcomed the announcement of a peace agreement signed between the DRC and Rwanda in Washington. Any initiative aimed at ending violence deserves attention. However, on the ground, nothing has changed. Armed groups continue to occupy territories. Civilians are killed. Women and girls are raped. Young people are forcibly recruited. Families continue to flee their own country in search of safety.

Peace cannot remain a document signed far from those who suffer its absence every day. Through the #StandWithCongo campaign, I have joined other African peace activists in calling on the United Nations and the international community to move beyond words and ensure:

• Total transparency of the clauses of the agreement;
• Meaningful participation of Congolese and Rwandan civil society in the implementation process;
• A moratorium on mining in conflict areas until a local citizen control mechanism is put in place;
• The cessation of hostilities and the immediate withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory;
• The full restoration of State authority in occupied areas, the respect of the DRC’s territorial integrity and border inviolability, and genuine bilateral cooperation based on mutual respect;
• The guarantee of national security and public peace, as well as the unhindered movement of people and goods across the country;
• A military disengagement with support focused on social reconstruction and restorative justice.

I believe deeply that peace must be more than a signature. It must be a lived reality for those who suffer every morning, every afternoon, every evening, and every night. Today, I invite you to stand with us, to stand with Congo. Please take a moment to sign the letter addressed to the United Nations.

Je m'appelle Norbert Byambo Kagosi, je suis un militant pour la paix congolais et le coordinateur du chapitre Isingiro-Nakivale de World BEYOND War. Depuis 2018, je vis en Ouganda en tant que réfugié, après avoir fui la République démocratique du Congo en raison de la guerre, de l'insécurité et des violences récurrentes.

Je suis né dans une zone de guerre. J'ai grandi en étant témoin de meurtres, de déplacements de population et des souffrances quotidiennes des civils. Depuis plus de trois décennies, la population de la RDC vit sous le poids d'un conflit qui a causé des millions de morts, contraint des communautés entières à l'exil et exposé les femmes, les enfants et les jeunes à une violence et une peur extrêmes.

Comme beaucoup de Congolais, j'ai salué l'annonce d'un accord de paix signé entre la RDC et le Rwanda à Washington. Toute initiative visant à mettre fin à la violence mérite notre attention. Cependant, sur le terrain, rien n'a changé. Les groupes armés continuent d'occuper des territoires. Des civils sont tués. Des femmes et des filles sont violées. Des jeunes sont recrutés de force. Des familles continuent de fuir leur propre pays en quête de sécurité.

La paix ne peut rester un document signé loin de ceux qui souffrent chaque jour de son absence. À travers la campagne #PourLaPaixAuCongo, je me suis joint à d'autres militants africains pour la paix afin d'appeler les Nations unies et la communauté internationale à aller au-delà des mots et à garantir :

• La transparence totale des clauses de l’accord ;
• La participation significative de la société civile congolaise et rwandaise au processus de mise en œuvre ;
• Un moratoire sur l’exploitation minière dans les zones de conflit jusqu’à ce qu’un mécanisme local de contrôle citoyen soit mis en place ;
• La cessation des hostilités et le retrait immédiat des troupes rwandaises du territoire congolais ;
• Le rétablissement intégral de l’autorité de l’État dans les zones occupées, le respect de l’intégrité territoriale et de l’inviolabilité des frontières de la RDC, ainsi qu’une véritable coopération bilatérale fondée sur le respect mutuel ;
• La garantie de la sécurité nationale et de la paix publique, ainsi que la libre circulation des personnes et des biens sur l’ensemble du territoire national ;
• Un désengagement militaire avec un soutien axé sur la reconstruction sociale et la justice réparatrice.

Je crois profondément que la paix doit être plus qu'une simple signature. Elle doit être une réalité vécue par ceux qui souffrent chaque matin, chaque après-midi, chaque soir et chaque nuit. Aujourd'hui, je vous invite à vous joindre à nous, à vous lever pour la paix au Congo. Veuillez prendre un moment pour signer la lettre adressée aux Nations Unies.
